I was born in Calcutta in November 1969. My father was a gifted tabla player hence I grew up in an atmosphere of music. I studied Hindustani vocal classical music from 1983 to 1988 at the University of Allahabad. I began my tutelage under my father since I was an infant. Later I had the wonderful opportunity to be able to train under the guidance of several well-known singers such as Shukla Bandhopadhyay, Robin Chakrabarty, Shipra Bose and Arun Bhadhuri. At present I am under the training and guidance of the well renowned vocalist, Shantanu Bandhopadhyay of the Vishnupur Gharana.

I sing traditional ragas, along with traditional songs of Bengal, Bhajans and Devotional hymns in Sanskrit. Since about 1985, my husband Bibekananda Santra, a recognized painter, our son Sreeman and I have been living in Pondicherry.  I began my musical institute, Tapasya shortly after I moved to Pondicherry, with the hope of sharing the art I love with other similar-minded aspirants.

In 2000, I was invited to perform at the World Music Festival in Chateau d’Oex in Switzerland. Since then I have been making yearly visits to Switzerland to teach students from all over Europe who are unable to make the trip to Pondicherry.

I have given several concerts and workshops in Switzerland, Belgium, Romania, Berin and France. In 2015 I had to wonderful opportunity to perform in Budapest’s Indian Embassy and later in the Govedarou Art Gallery in Greece.
